Waitrose face mask update: Latest to enforce masks joining Sainsbury’s and Morrisons

Waitrose will be putting marshalls at the front of all its shops to make sure rules are followed. They will hand out disposable masks, but those who refuse and are not medically exempt will be denied entrance.

Waitrose is also ensuring all its staff wear masks, even when behind screens.

Waitrose's executive director of operations Andrew Murphy said: “We are acutely aware the country is at a critical point in the pandemic and are constantly thinking about how best the Partnership and our Partners can play our part in limiting the spread and impact of the virus.

“We’ve listened carefully to the clear change in tone and emphasis of the views and information shared by the UK’s governments in recent days.

“While we recognise the detail of formal guidance has not changed, we feel it is right for us – and in the best interests of our Partners and customers – to take proactive steps to further enhance our Covid security and related operational policies.

“By insisting on the wearing of face coverings, over and above the social distancing measures we already have in place, we aim to make our shops even safer for customers.”

Morrisons chief executive David Potts said: “Those who are offered a face covering and decline to wear one won't be allowed to shop at Morrisons unless they are medically exempt.

“Our store colleagues are working hard to feed you and your family, please be kind.”

Sainsbury's made a similar statement.

Sainsbury's outlined exactly how this would work in an email to customers, addressed from chief executive Simon Roberts.

It read: “I have spent a lot of time in our stores over the past few days and I need to ask for your help with two key issues to keep you and all my colleagues safe.

“When shopping in our stores, you must wear a mask or visor unless you have a medical exemption. And you should also shop on your own. Thank you for your support.

“Security guards will support our colleagues at the front of store and will challenge customers who are not wearing masks or who are shopping in groups. I know you’ll understand and support what we are trying to do.

“We have also significantly reduced the number of customers allowed in our stores at any one time to ensure social distancing is maintained at all times.

“Together, these steps will go a long way to keep everyone safe, whether you are shopping or working with us.

“Please wear a mask or visor and please shop alone in our stores. Thank you for helping us to keep everyone safe.”
