World War 2 exposed: Underwater drone makes ‘incredible’ Nazi Germany find | World | News

The discovery was made using an underwater drone scanning the beaches along what was an extensive Nazi Germany strongholds that spanned the coast of continental Europe and Scandinavia as a defence against an anticipated Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Historic enthusiasts who run the YouTube channel “WW2 History Hunter” may have found evidence from the Battle of Britain, when the RAF pulled off an incredible defence against continuous large-scale air attacks orchestrated by Adolf Hitler. Remains of this marvellous episode of wit and bravery still scatter the waters between the UK and mainland Europe and so the team sent their Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) below the surface looking for such evidence.

They said last week: “We are down into the deep and we are just going to do a little scouting around, see if we can find anything of interest.

“We are not that deep, but we are looking for something really special.

“We have to reel out a little bit, but you can see this thing is very stable but we can tilt it down so we have a very good view of what’s down there.

“The activity of the Germans was here, so who knows what we can find when we explore these areas here.”

They scoured the waters for some time along the coast, before spotting something of interest.

They added: “What is that? It looks very interesting indeed, I think we’ve finally got something, boom.

“We have found a fantastic aircraft tyre here from the  German Luftwaffe and that looks suspiciously like that.

“There are other things here as well, old tyres from trucks and stuff.

“This could be an aircraft wheel from the Allies or the Germans, but we are going to get it up and show you.”

The team fished out the tyre and got it back on dry land, before identifying what they thought it was.

They continued: “We got it, it’s very lightweight, we are going to pull it up, it’s incredible.

“It’s back in the boat and now it feels a lot heavier, I’m shaking it was so exciting.

“We bought it back up from the deep, and I think we have solved the issue of what it is.

“It is not a tailwheel, this wheel, I think, it belonged to a bomb rack, which is absolutely fantastic.”

Historian Stephen Bungay cited Germany’s failure to destroy Britain’s air defences to force an armistice as the first major German defeat in World War 2 and a crucial turning point in the conflict.

The Battle of Britain takes its name from a speech given by Prime Minister Winston Churchill to the House of Commons on June 18.

He said: “What General Weygand called the ‘Battle of France‘ is over.

“I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin.”
