Should a person incur a late penalty fine, they may be able to appeal it, if they are found to have a “reasonable excuse”.

This may include a serious illness, or a close, family bereavement.

It’s possible to calculate how much one’s fine will be on the Gov.uk website.

Last year, 93 percent of tax returns were completed on time, but the number of people who miss the deadline for the past few years has remained around the 700,000 mark.
