Kashmir avalanche: Horrific landslide leaves at least 85 dead and 10 missing | World | News

Dozens of homes have been destroyed this morning after a series of avalanches caused landslides, killing at least 85. It was reported this morning that the death toll was at 55. It has since risen by 30 but more people are feared to have been killed.

While the Pakistan-administered Kashmir region is prone to severe weather, the current death toll is its worst in history, the BBC reports.

Up to 100 people are still missing, Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority said.

The series of avalanches occurred in Neelum Valley.

Shocking pictures released on social media show homes collapsed under tonnes of snow.

Locals are seen in photos scrambling to gather materials lost form their houses.

Huge stacks of wood are piled high as the hunt for those missing continues.

Kashmir – along with Jammu – is a region formerly administered by India as a state from 1954 to 2019, constituting the southern and southeastern portion of the larger Kashmir region.

The area has been the subject of much dispute between India, Pakistan and China since the mid 20th century.

The region is north of India and to the north east of Pakistan.

This is a breaking story.
