At least three people were killed when a pendulum-style ride snapped which also saw 27 people hurt in Ahmedabad, western India. Riders were seen in shock footage crashing from the air by witnesses at Kankaria Amusement Park, located in Gujurat in India. Local news initially reported two people had been killed but tragically, a third died in hospital due to their injuries on the Discovery ride, according to India Today.

In horror footage the ride can be swinging back and forth before the arm of the pendulum snaps and dismantles.

It crashes against the podium sending riders flying to the ground.

Police spokesperson Vijay Nehra said: “An inquiry has been ordered. Police, along with a forensic team, reached the spot to find out the reasons behind the accident.”

Ahmedabad mayor Bijal Patel said: “29 people were brought to the hospital out of whom two died while 27 are being treated.”

Victims were seen covered in blood and screaming for help while others remained trapped in their seats.

Onlookers desperately tried to free them.

The victims were said to be adults.

No children were present on the ride.

Fire brigade spokesperson Dastoor said of the incident: “There are 32 seats in the ride that go round. The pipe of the main shaft broke and crashed on the ground.

“How that pipe broke is a matter of investigation by Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).”

Reports also said the ride was near maximum capacity with 31 people on board at the time of the incident.

Councillor Baddrudin Sheikh of the Indian National Congress political party blamed the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying: “The ruling BJP failed to ensure regular maintenance. A complaint of negligence should be registered against [the] authorities.”

Mayor Patel said: “An inquiry will be conducted to ascertain as to what went wrong, and steps against those responsible for the fault will be taken soon.”

Authorities are in the process of carrying out an investigation into the tragedy.

The cable was said to have snapped as a result of the ride malfunctioning.
